Rafael López Talks Latin Music Legends Stamps

Selena - Latin Music Legends - by Rafael López

Last week the United States Postal Service released its Latin Music Legends Commemorative Forever Stamps. The five artists honored are Celia Cruz, Selena, Carlos Gardel, Tito Puente, and Carmen Miranda.

Artist, Rafael López, who is mostly known for his colorful abstract murals and surrealist Children’s book illustrations, painted the five designs. This was the third time Lopez worked with art director Ethel Kessler, having previously worked on two other commemorative stamps for the USPS.
Most recently, in 2008, his work was – again – exposed nationally when he joined Artists for Obama in creating VOZ UNIDA – an official poster used for the OBAMA/BIDEN presidential campaign. Only nine other artists were part of the select group.

Check out Rafael López’s blog to see exclusive pictures with the Quintanilla family at the first-day-of-issue ceremony and early design sketches. www.RafaelLopez.com

The artwork is AMAZING. Many thanks to Rafael López for taking on the daunting project and to Emmanuel for sharing this story. I bought the stamps already but may just frame them. 🙂
